• When starting morning glory seeds, which usually need nicking to sprout, another way to do it is to put the seeds in an ice cube tray, add water, and freeze overnight. Next day, remove the ice cubes with the seeds inside, and plant the cubes. The seeds sprout nicely this way
• Save your used tea bags and place them over the drain holes in the bottom of your flower pots. It keeps the soil from spilling out and allows for drainage. Used coffee filters are also good for this if you aren't a tea drinker.
• To prevent slugs getting to plants in containers, smear outside of container with petroleum jelly or WD40.
• Put support stakes in before you plant a new tree to avoid the possibility of damaging the roots.
• An old hot water bottle filled sparingly with foam rubber chips is a handy kneeling pad for long gardening jobs.
• A piece of wood placed upright in a plastic water barrel will prevent the barrel splitting when it freezes.
